May 25, 2017. Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces in South Korea defended the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system, citing the latest missile tests conducted by North Korea.

The deployment of THAAD has been met by local opposition which claim that the system may be seen as a threat by China. They have voiced concern that China may scale back trade with South Korea due to the deployment. China would rather not have such an advanced system so close to Beijing. China’s capital is a little over 500 miles away from the THAAD installation. China’s concern is mostly over the advanced radar and electronic espionage systems which typically accompany the THAAD system.

May 21, 2017. North Korea successfully tests the Pukguksong-2 missile which is estimated to have a striking range of 1,200 miles. Kim Jong-un has approved this missile system for mass production and deployment, further raising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

May 23, 2017. An apparent Drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) was spotted flying out of North Korea over the demilitarized zone that separates the two Korea’s.
